Our eyes are our primary means of communication; an intimate conversation will disclose our biological age as well as our lifestyle, feelings, and mood.
When we are young, the eyes occupy a large portion of the face, a feature that is exaggerated in Japanese manga characters. As we get older, the area of the eyes relative to the face shrinks, ultimately exposing our actual age.
In aesthetic medicine, the eyes are crucial because of their key role in facial appearance and interpersonal communication. Ignoring the eye area during facial rejuvenation procedures results in an unnatural and unsightly outcome. The appearance of taut skin with a narrow eye opening is one of the signs of a failed facelift procedure.
There are a number of options available to restore the eyes’ youthful appearance in the cosmetics and aesthetic medicine sectors. We will go over a few of them in the article that follows.
Applying cosmetics and makeup to revitalize the eyes’ look
There is a large range of cosmetics for the eyes. While some concentrate on conditions like swollen eyes or dark circles around the eyes, others promise to address wrinkles that develop around the eye hollow.
Because of their similar effect to Botox treatments, cosmetics based on the amino acid GABA (GABA amino butyric acid) are particularly recommended for delaying the aging of the skin around the eyes. Specifically, the application of a cream based on the amino acid GABA causes the ring muscle surrounding the eyes to relax, blurring the appearance of wrinkles in the eye area. It should be mentioned that these creams only have a short-term impact, and regrettably, there are currently no creams that can entirely eliminate wrinkles.
Cosmetics containing stimulants like menthol, caffeine, etc. can be used to treat eyes that are puffy. The small blood arteries in the eyelid region are constricted by these solutions. Additionally, the effects of these creams are transient, and they may even lessen with use over time.
Applying the right amount of makeup can also provide the impression of bigger eyes and a youthful face. From ancient Egypt to the present day, women have used makeup to enhance the appearance of their eyes by painting the eyelids, accentuating the eyelashes, curling and lengthening them artificially.
Cosmetic procedures for the eye region
From facelifts to targeted Botox injections, aesthetic medicine provides a range of treatments aimed at revitalizing the eye region.
Botox
By temporarily paralyzing the small facial muscles, Botox injections can remove the frown lines that surround the eyes. The true innovation of Botox treatments, however, lies in their highly precise ability to target particular regions surrounding the eye. For instance, laugh lines around the eyes can be smoothed out by injecting Botox to paralyze the ring muscle surrounding the outer portion of the eye.
Light therapy (photorejuvenation)
The appearance of the eyes and face can be greatly enhanced by light therapy, also known as photorejuvenation, which is frequently used to lighten skin blemishes and occasionally to remove capillaries in the eyes that resemble dark circles.
Filling hollows around the eyes with hyaluronic acid
These hollows are caused by a decrease in the quantity of subcutaneous fat in the face, particularly around the eyes, as people age. Dark circles around the eyes are removed and the cheekbones and eye sockets are “unified” by injecting hyaluronic acid into these hollows. The ultimate effect is a noticeable improvement in the eyes’ look.
Fractional laser
Often referred to as “fan wrinkles,” deep grin lines along the sides of the eyes can be removed using fractional laser treatments. Sometimes a combination of skin lightening procedures around the eyes and fractional laser treatment is advised for especially favorable outcomes.
Eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery is advised when there is sagging and loose skin in the upper eyelid area, which affects not only the cosmetic look but also the field of vision. The extra skin is removed during the procedure. In milder cases, Botox injections can be used to raise the skin fold and eyebrows; but, in more severe cases, eyelid surgery under local anesthetic in an operating room will be required.
Facelift
Surgery to raise the top portion of the face may be an option in severe cases, which also involve sagging eyebrows and a loose aspect of the facial skin. It should be mentioned that a facelift does not remove the need for Botox injections to remove the hollows that develop around the eyes and the lines that are created between the eyebrows.
Training of the eye muscles
The treating physician must carefully choose which little facial muscles to inject Botox into in order to get the desired outcomes. The botulinum toxin may spread to other parts of the face and paralyze them if the patient massages the treated area or engages in physical activity like swimming or running in the first few hours following treatment. This could result in an unsightly outcome.
The following exercise is suggested to revitalize the appearance of the eyes: close your eyes, place your index fingers on your eyebrows, and lift them. At the same time, use your ring fingers to press your upper eyelids downward, preventing the muscles that open your eyes.
This exercise is beneficial because it works two muscles at once: the one that lifts the upper eyelids and opens the eyes, and the one that stretches and lengthens the external ring muscle surrounding the eyes.
